What

A kinda music app - sans friend counts, hype and hyperbole. Artists get real, honest feedback on their music, users get a novel, simple listening tool.

How

We've used mootools, nifty auth, paperclip and mime-types. The audio player is using a few wee bits and pieces from Jplayer / bankai.fm player and is powered by Moosound.

All stock photography is from sxc.hu, or made by the team during the rumble. :)

All the above are open source funbits.

Here’s a few stats I pulled from ./script/console

We’ve isolated the labels bug to webkit browsers. Site is still completely usable and nice but the sign up form is a bit confusing without the labels appearing.

Luckily most visitors use firefox :)

At least the random animals are awesome, amirite?

Argh… yeah, that, labels for inputs in the tray don’t show up in Safari/Chrome. How embarrassing.

I think Bruno may have run into a browser related bug we have with labels not showing up.

This is a very interesting concept. I found it to be a unique to discover music as well as provide feedback. It is useful from a musician’s perpective as well. One thing I would change about is the signup form which seems a bit confusing with the Protips at the bottom.

Wow, this is sweet – and I’m not somebody who visits a lot of music sites.

The design is exceptional, with a lot of nice little touches. I love the expanding drawer for secondary pages, so you can keep listening to the music while you edit your profile; Cthulhu as a third gender gets a big thumbs-up; granting a default username (mr. jigglypimp, really?) is fantastic. My only reservation is about the protip/custom status bar – it’s very hard to notice, and seems inconsistently implemented across all the elements of the site. Oh, and the animals scattered here and there? :)

I don’t know of any sites quite like this one – obviously, Last.fm and Pandora allow for some of the rating features, but as far as I’m aware they’re not as open to new artists as this is, and I can see it filling an interesting niche as a result.

As I mentioned above, I don’t normally use sites like this. If they were all as nice as this, though, I could see myself becoming a much more frequent visitor. In fact, I’ve had this open in the background while I’ve been judging other sites. I also know several artists who I’ll be directing your way…

I can’t think of anything I’d expect on a site like this that you didn’t do, with the possible exceptions of a recommendation system (which might not fit into the overall vision of the site, but could be useful in a lot of ways – for both listeners and artists), and a revenue model (which you might not want, but I can think of a couple just offhand). Neither of these are reasons to knock points off, though.

Fantastic job!
